Founded by Bruce Lee, JKD is a hybrid between multiple martial arts styles. Classically trained in Chinese fighting disciplines, such as boxing and Wing Chun, Lee sought a combat system that revolved around simple forms and seamless movements that could be performed at a rapid speed. Since no such system existed, he created his own. In the process, he included only the moves that worked and were effective and cut out martial arts moves that were too flashy and failed to perform well. The final result was JKD, or The Way of the Intercepting Fist.

At its core, JKD was a fighting style at focused on formlessness. This makes the style a philosophy more than a fighting style. There is no classification technique or set of rules to differentiate the moves constitute JKD and those that don’t. It also views combat from all possible angles, not just from one. Lee designed this fighting style to be free; it does not fit into any particular martial arts style.
